- The registration date for trademarks and designs now appears in the results list. Your browser remembers your column selection, so you may need to show the column again by choosing “More” and then “Columns”.

NIPO will discontinue the Alert and Saved Searches feature from 2 February 2026. These functions are based on outdated technology which is both difficult and costly to maintain.
You do not need to take any action if you no longer need saved searches or alerts. All alerts will automatically end after 2 February 2026.
Alternatives to Alert and Saved Searches:
- If you have used “Follow case” to remind you of renewals or annual fees in your own cases: NIPO still sends notifications in Altinn or by regular mail before the deadline.
- If you have used alerts to monitor other people's cases: Perform regular searches in the Search Service. Each case has its own web address which you can save and check periodically.
- If you have used the service to track competitors: You can monitor announcements in The Norwegian Gazette, where you can filter by name, or search by date interval in the Search Service.
- Professional users are welcome to use NIPO’s open data to create similar solutions.
You can find these services collected under My Page
Starting from week 40, 2025, you can filter on previous agent under “Changes in party” in the Gazette.
Many agents have requested the ability to see when a client has changed representative. NIPO no longer sends notifications of such changes, but you can now find this information in the Gazette.
How to do it:
Open the Gazette for patents, trademarks, or designs each week.
Go to section "Changes in party".
Use the “Previous agent” filter and search for the name of your firm.
Cases where you are listed as the previous agent will appear.
Compare these cases to your own system.
We have replaced the detailed case view for patents and designs with a new version.
What's new?
- NIPO's new design profile has been implemented.
- Case details now update automatically several times every day – no need for an "Update" button.
- The document list includes documents from the case itself and related processes. For example, filter by "Opposition" to only see what interests you.
- Status is more prominent thanks to colour coding and icons.
- Case details open in the same tab as the hit list. To open a new tab, right-click on the case number.
Missign something? Comments are welcome by e-mail to mig@patentstyret.no. We are still working on some improvements.
We are planning to replace the detailed case view for patents and designs with a new version by the end of April 2025. This new version is already accessible via "Try new version" at case level. One more self-service solution is available under "My cases". Now you can:
- Change your reference in patent, trademark and design cases (NEW);
- Delete classes in registered Norwegian trademarks, typically to reduce renewal fees;
- Trigger extensions of terms and get immediate confirmation;
- Read documents in your own non-publicly available cases.
Can you use these? Such actions require secure access, so you need to:
- Log inn using ID-porten;
- Be the address for correspondence, typically an agent or an applicant/owner without an agent;
- Hold the role "Patent, trademark and design" for the firm you represent in Altinn.
The Norwegian Patent Office (NIPO) will hold an information meeting (physical and webinar) on June 11, 2024 at 09.00 - 10.00 CET. The target audience are suppliers of case management systems for IP attorneys and law firms as well as renewal and annuity companies.
The aim is to inform about new opportunities in two areas:
- Open data: possibilities of machine to machine download of case data from NIPO for the purposes of e.g. data comparison, import of new portfolios, groundwork for due diligence etc.
- Integration with new Altinn: how to adapt your IP management system to exchange information with new Altinn3 when Altinn2 is phased out.
The meeting is primarily for decision makers and does not require prior technical knowledge. System owners are also welcome.
Register at Open Data and Altinn Integration event - NIPO (patentstyret.no)
On April 8, 2024, NIPO launched a new correspondence form in Altinn. We prefill the form with data from our register and allow for bigger attachment files.
In Detailed view, you can see and download documents concerning change of goods, agent, applicant or owner, as long as these do not involve cases that are not publicly available.
The transition from Detailed view to Payment has been stabilized to make sure your case always ends up in the shopping cart.
You will also notice links from Detailed view to the Digital Gazette, where you can see historical changes on the case timeline.
Digital Client services will be unavailable between 16:00 CET 15 March and 17 March, 2024. If urgent, please conduct your searches, extensions of term, cancellations of classes and payments of annuities and renewals before the weekend.
The following services are affected:
- Search and alert
- Payment
- Application Guide (filing applications)
- Product selector
- My cases
- My messages
- Statistics
- Name search (only domain and company names will be searched)
What can I do in urgent matters?
- Altinn is working; send your applications and correspondence via Altinn.
- If you did not manage to pay a fee with the last deadline on 15 March, please pay directly to IBAN: NO8282760100192. BIC/SWIFT: DNBANOKKXXX with a reference to the case.
The reason for downtime are substantial changes to our IT infrastructure. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
NIPO's payment service has been re-opened. The shopping cart has been updated with new prices from 01.03.2024.
Have you noticed that NIPO has undergone a rebranding? Digital client services are also changing logos and colours, a process we are implementing gradually to preserve existing functionality. The old profile will remain on a few services for a little longer.
"My account" has been renamed to "My cases." The new name describes the service better and distinguishes it form a user account. The url remains unchanged: https://account.patentstyret.no/
We continue to add useful shortcuts to our Services, with the latest addition being the self-service cancellation of trademark classes.
You can now search and filter on oppositions, requests and appeals
- involving a third party (observations, oppositions, administrative reviews)
- important changes initiated by the owner (e.g. limitation of patent claims after grant)
- changes made by NIPO (e.g. administrative annulment of a trademark)
- appeals against NIPO decisions filed with the Board of Appeals
Read more about this for Patents, Trademarks or Designs
See (i) for search tips.
We have placed third party observations under the title “Opposition/Third party observation.” The events are now arranged in a chronological order:
- Opposition/third party observation
- Administrative review (the type of review shows, too)
- Board of Appeal cases
Screen tips are updated with links to information resources.
Product selector: minor improvements.
Partial renewal of trademarks: have you seen our self-service solution yet? If not, read more https://services.patentstyret.no/#/news/03102023
Cases in My account are now accessible via case-specific urls (provided that you are authorised and logged in). The pattern is as follows:
https://account.patentstyret.no/#/cases?domain=Varemerke&caseID=201412217
https://account.patentstyret.no/#/cases?domain=Patent&caseID=20150217
https://account.patentstyret.no/#/cases?domain=Design&caseID=20170067
Partial renewal of trademarks has become more relevant with the new Trademarks Act, requiring extra fees for classes exceeding one. NIPO has developed a self-service solution for cancellation of classes. You can cancel selected classes in “My account” and proceed to Payment, where correct fees are re-calculated immediately.
Restrictions: Because cancellation of classes has an impact on the IP right, we have placed this functionality in “My account,” which requires authentication with Bank-ID or similar. Companies who only handle renewals will therefore need to co-operate with the agent of record, who has the authorization to cancel classes. We do not allow self-service for cancellation of individual terms, classes in pending applications or registrations under administrative review either. Cancellations in international marks must still be handled via WIPO.
How does it work? Log into “My account” with ID-porten. Choose the party you will represent. Open the filter on the left. Find the trademark registration. Select classes to delete and confirm your choice. A confirmation will pop up. Proceed to Payment and pay the new fees. A letter to confirm the partial cancellation will be sent via Altinn. Watch this video for a demo.
Cannot see the case in “My account?” Make sure that you have the role “Patent, trademark and design” for the selected company in Altinn.
You may also cancel classes in national trademark registrations for other purposes, not only renewal.
Many thanks to our customers for their time, valuable input and help during testing. If you have any comments or would like to engage in user testing next time, please contact kundesenter@patentstyret.no
More columns in the hit list: upon request from several customers, we are now showing more columns in the hit list in the Search Service by default (all available columns for trademarks and designs). Self-service solutions: we are happy to see that the use of due-date-extensions has resurged after the rebuild. More self-service solutions are coming in “My Account.” Make sure you have the role “Patent, Trademark and Design” in Altinn to access content in “My Account”.
EP validation: If your case management system does not already do so, please feel free to use the search service as a diagnostic tool before attempting to validate an EP patent to see if the deadline has not expired and if Norway is designated. You can get a pre-filled EP validation form directly from the detailed case view. We also offer a payment option for upcoming annual fees in the shopping cart at the same time.
For your convenience we have collected several smart solutions and shortcuts under this “Digital Services overview”.

Update May 4, 2020:
- Minor adjustments for the Product Selector and My Messages
- Security update when viewing images in Search
We are working to get all the terms from the EU countries' harmonized database (HDB) into the Product Selector. You now have far more pre-approved products to choose from when searching for a trademark (52,000 terms versus about 27,000 previously). The change is initially aimed at professional customers and is only available in the Product Selector's 'Advanced Tools'. Translation is available both when you start with a list in English and when you start with a list in Norwegian.
In the previous release we improved the search engine for Search, and now we have improved the fuzzy search so that it complements the standard search better. We have also improved the guidance texts as well as some functionality. Noise when using operator search has been reduced. You get slightly fewer, but more accurate hits. In particular will this be visible when using? and *.
In addition we have fixed bugs and minor errors on all services.
